40 Things You Didn’t Know About The PS4

Sony recently revealed an “Ultimate FAQ” page on their website, which is quite extensive.  Below are some of the key points condensed down, and ones you may not have known initially:

  1. Whilst the PS4 launches on the 15th November in North America, it won’t hit Europe until 29th November.  Japan has to wait until February 2014!
  2. The box includes an HDMI cable, the second console to do so after the Wii U.
  3. The box also includes a mono headset, a first for PlayStation.
  4. There is no external power brick for the PS4.
  5. The internal hard drive can be upgraded.
  6. External hard drives cannot be used.
  7. The stand required to have the PS4 upright is not included, and comes at a small cost.
  8. The PS4 is 10x more powerful than the PS3.
  9. The PS4 began development in 2008.
  10. 4K resolution isn’t currently supported in either games or movies.
  11. Video settings won’t require a reset when swapping TVs, as was the case for PS3.
  12. The PS4 supports 3D gameplay.
  13. All PS4 Blu-ray Disc games are cached to the hard drive, not all will require this process to complete before you start playing.
  14. If you decide to rent a game, and they buy it digitally, the disc install data will be deleted in order to install the digital version.
  15. The PS4 will be able to charge DualShock 4 controllers whilst in standby mode.
  16. The PS4 cooling system is quieter than the PS3s.
  17. It is possible to install the day 1 update via USB.
  18. The PS4 supports up to 2000 online friends.
  19. The PS4 provides the option of allowing your friends to see your real name.
  20. The PS4 allows you to upload your Facebook profile picture as your PSN profile picture.
  21. Playing online multiplayer games between PS3 and PS4 users is technically possible, depending if the game developer decides to support it.
  22. Sony does not impose region locks on games.
  23. The PS4 supports automatic updates.
  24. The light bar on the DualShock 4 changes colour depending on how game developers use this function.  It cannot be disabled, however.
  25. It’s possible to output all game audio through the DualShock 4 headset jack.
  26. PS3 and PS4 users will be able to communicate with each other using text messages.
  27. The DualShock 4 has less latency than the DualShock 3 controller.
  28. The DualShock 4 can be connected to a PC.
  29. Bluetooth headsets that are currently commercially available are incompatible with the PS4.
  30. The PlayStation Camera can be used for voice chat and voice commands.
  31. The PS Vita can be used to stream PS4 gameplay to the Vita screen.
  32. Supported titles will allow PS4 and PS Vita users to play together in the same game via online multiplayer.
  33. PlayStation Plus is required for multiplayer gameplay online, except for selected free-to-play titles.
  34. If you don’t have a PlayStation Plus membership, you can still access online multiplayer modes if you log into a PS4 system which is set as “Primary” by a PS Plus member.
  35. You can access content you’re purchased on up to two PS4 systems simultaneously.  Two people can use the account’s content on two different PS4 systems at once.
  36. PS4 will not support MP3 playback.
  37. PS4 will allow background music using the Music Unlimited service.
  38. The PS4 will only allow you to upload gameplay to Facebook.
  39. The PS4 constantly records the last 15 minutes of gameplay footage automatically.
  40. The PS4 supports external HDMI-based game capture devices.
